Iron Artist 2005...a recap

Team Used Takes Home This Year’s Cup du SCRAP

Ten teams came out to compete in the Iron Artist Sculpt-off competition held last July 23rd, 2005 at the Wonder Ballroom on NE Russell. The competition, in its third year, is a fundraiser for the School & Community Reuse Action Project (SCRAP), a North Portland Non-Profit whose focus is creative reuse. The rivalry between teams was intense even before the competition began. Team Used, one of the last teams to arrive, made a grand entrance, circling the competition using orange traffic cones as megaphones in an effort to intimidate their opposition.

Once the teams were checked in, the rules were explained (only five team members could be working on a sculpture at one time, the sculpture could not exceed 3 ft x 3 ft x 3ft, the Referees are their own body that make up rules at random, and that bribery was highly encouraged). As I was about to announce the final team, someone gave me five dollars and a note asking me to say, “Team Used is going to lose.” Thus the bribery began. The competition officially commenced with the announcement of this year’s theme – “Flow”. Teams had three hours to build a sculpture using only the materials that were provided to them from SCRAP, Wacky Willy’s, The ReBuilding Center, Free Geek and Tazo. Teams were allowed to bring specific tools and a Secret Weapon, which could be a tool or raw material.

There was never a dull moment. Yellow flags were being tossed by the referees, bonus points and demerits were awarded, and some folks were banished to the two penalty boxes to think about what they had done. While sculpting and bribery was taking place outside, a reuse carnival was entertaining the kids inside the ballroom, complete with games, face painting, fortune telling ducks and caricatures.

At 7pm, the competition ended and teams installed their finished pieces inside the ballroom for the judges to examine in solitude. While the judges were determining the winners, the March Fourth! Marching band entertained the crowd outside and a dance party erupted in the street. When the judges were done, the public was allowed to enter the ballroom to view the sculptures and to vote for the People’s Choice Award, while DJ Incredible Kid provided some background tunes. At about 9pm the awards were presented. This year’s winner of the Cup du SCRAP was Team Used sponsored by Lensbabies. They created a sculpture of a person that represented “flow” interactively.

Every team received an award:
  • Cup du SCRAP - Team Used (lensbabies)
  • Best use of theme - Team Deep Squeek
  • Best Dressed - Etcskels (Ciao Vito)
  • Most Enthusiastic - Arts & Scraps (Wild Oats)
