At 12noon, when teams began to arrive, we had a feeling this would be an exciting event. The enthusiasm was high, the costumes were amazing. Bribes were out in full force even prior to the start of the competition. Cupcakes, cookies, pins, honey with plastic babies inside...
At 1pm, the secret theme of "Farm" was announced and teams got to work. The referrees had their hands full with 12 teams to monitor this year. One team in particular, The Ladies Pie Society, kept the referees on their toes and seemed to spend more time in the penalty box than actually working on their sculpture. As time passed, the sculptures began to take shape. In the end, there were quite a few chickens and farm scenes that had been craftily sculpted out of the provided materials. I am always amazed and impressed with the results.
As the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers led the crowd to the street for some entertainment, the judges had private time with the sculptures. They had been observing the progress throughout the competition and had gathered enough info to make their decision. They also came up with prize categories for the other teams. After the public voted for people's choice, the awards were given out to the teams. The judges presented each team with a scrappily crafted trophy and each team member was presented with a medal, Olympic-style.
In the end, I think everyone had a great time. Teams left the event revising their strategies for next year. Thank you to all of our sponsors, teams, raffle donors, spectators and especially to the volunteers that made Iron Artist a success.
The winning sculpture is currently on display at SCRAP!
