Iron Artist Competition
Benefiting SCRAP

The School & Community Reuse Action Project (SCRAP) will hold it's annual Iron Artist Competition FUNdraiser on September 13, 2008.

This high-energy celebration of creative reuse is a large-scale sculpt-off competition involving teams of local artists, rowdy referees, celebrity judges, live music, kid’s activities, merriment and mayhem. Teams have three hours to complete a sculpture using only the materials and theme provided.

Over the years, Iron Artist has become one of the most beloved events in the Portland metro area with incredible support from the community. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this year’s event! Sponsorship of this event is limited, and there are only a limited number of team spaces; many teams return each year.

Iron Artist Details

The Iron Artist competition will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 in inner SE Portland at 2nd and Main. Daria O'Neill will be MCing this raucous event. Building will happen at 11am and the final creations will be available to see at 2pm.

Iron Artist is the ultimate display of creative reuse in action. Teams of artists have three hours to transform used materials into a sculpture based on a theme that is announced at the start of the competition, Saturday morning. Think Iron Chef meets Junkyard Wars, throw in some rowdy referees, a beer garden, and teams in costume and you have Iron Artist. In the end, a panel of local celebrities has the task of awarding the prestigious Cup du SCRAP, a gold trashcan adorned with Mardi Gras beads. In 2007, 130 artists competed and more than 700 spectators from the Portland community joined us throughout the day. SCRAP’s patronage is diverse in age and backgrounds, but they are united in their desire to be creative.

  • Iron Artist is an event that challenges the creative community while raising money for one of Portland’s most unique and well-respected environmental arts organizations. SCRAP combines three of Portland’s passions – sustainability, waste reduction and creativity – into one small organization that has a large impact in our community.
What to Expect:
  • Each team will have 3 hours to create their sculpture. The event is timed and monitored by a gang of wacky referees who will give demerits to teams who violate any of the rules. They also give bonus points for bribes. The referees are their own body and event organizers take zero responsibility for their arbitrary awarding of bonus points and demerits. (Remember, it’s all in fun--and helps a great cause!)
  • Finished pieces will be judged by our panel of celebrity judges, who will determine the winner of the Cup du SCRAP.
  • Sculptures will then be moved by their teams to a specific area and displayed for the audience to see and vote on.
  • Teams are responsible for clean-up of their area, including sorting of recycling, reusable materials, and true trash.
  • The winning sculpture will be on display at SCRAP for the year, and at SCRAP events throughout the city. If you are awarded the Cup du SCRAP, you will have it to display for the next year, and then we will need it back to award for 2009 Iron Artist.
  • Over the weekend, there will be games, live music, and entertainment for the whole family, a beer garden sponsored by Lompoc, food and fun!
  • Learn from local reuse and recycling groups so you can be a part of creative reuse year-round!

Don’t miss the chance to have your friends and co-workers attend, and help you win the people’s choice award! Tokens will be available all weekend and the winner will be announced on Sunday.

Complete Rules and Judging criteria as well as a Supply List information coming soon!
