Creatively Supporting The Arts Education	The Environment

SCRAP Staff
Teri Thomas Petersen, Executive Director, teri@scrapaction.org
SCRAP Program Focus: grants, membership program, art, volunteers, School presentations, community events, teacher trainings
Teri was raised in a small, rural town in Maryland on blue crabs, corn pudding and frequent trips with her artist grandmother to glean the goodies at the dump. Upon graduation from the University of Maryland, Teri applied her a BS in Art Education to supervising county park programs and directing an art camp in Maryland. A vacation to the great Northwest deposited Teri in Portland where she found a second home in the city's sustainable sensibility, dedication to community and proximity to nature. That "vacation" has lasted 15 years now, most of which she has shared with her talented husband Bob. Teri was a before and after schoolteacher with the SE Family YMCA and the graphic designer for a custom sign shop in downtown Portland before finding "creative reuse in action" at SCRAP. She has served as SCRAP's Director since June of 2000.

Joanna Dyer
Joanna Dyer, Communications & Marketing Coordinator, joanna@scrapaction.org
SCRAP Program Focus: website, newsletter, marketing, PR
Joanna has been involved with SCRAP since 2001 and has served in many capacities: SCRAP’s first Education Outreach Coordinator and AmeriCorps Volunteer through the Northwest Service Academy, Store Manager, Reuse & Recovery Director and now she's diving into Communications and Marketing. As the author of "The Reuser's Guide to Portland", Joanna strives to make reuse as accessible as possible and has hopes of branching out into other regions. A lifelong learner, she is finishing up her first year of a sustainable MBA program at Bainbridge Graduate Institute.

Emily Weisbard, Education Outreach Coordinator, emily@scrapaction.org
SCRAP Program Focus: Education and Outreach, community events, class presentations, teacher trainings, tours, outreach volunteers, Spanish outreach
Emily is a third-generation Portlander who has lived and traveled throughout Latin America, studying language and craft-making. She believes that everyone can be both a teacher as well as a student and has taken on the role of educator in many contexts – from demonstrating historical techniques of pottery-making to teaching in a Waldorf-inspired kindergarten. She is an avid bicyclist, costumer, performer and waste-reduction activist that is excited to inspire others to reuse as much as possible.

Sarah Dyer, Store Manager, sarah@scrapaction.org
SCRAP Program Focus: Store, Material Donations
Sarah Dyer hails from Wisconsin where her family and much-loved corgi Jack lives. She studied art at the University of Minnesota and is very happy to be applying her degree to her current profession at SCRAP. Her life as an artist and re-user began at an early age when her crafty mother began taking her to church rummage sales. Her current medium varies but she prefers collage and assemblage. Her work is inspired by her memories and travels which have taken her to many places including Australia, Malaysia, India, and Ecuador. Sarah’s favorite SCRAP item is vintage graph paper. She worships the volunteers.

Bethany Moore, Volunteer Coordinator, bethany@scrapaction.org
SCRAP Program Focus: Volunteer engagement in Creative Reuse Center, education, outreach and events.
Bethany Moore arrived in Portland after living for a few years on Orcas Island where she made sculpture out of amazing junk and ran an organization that records medieval music. When she walked into Scrap she knew she’d found her place, where all scrappers have that look of secret knowing, the glee of a “find”. You’ll see that twinkle in her eye when you show her something you’ve scored at Scrap.

Beth is a graduate of Western Washington University holding a BA in sculpture. She loves re-use centers, metal scrap yards, hardware stores, rooting through old barns and finding a priceless treasure on the side of the road. When not at Scrap, Beth can be found behind welding goggles, stone carving, wood working, road tripping, gardening, or trance dancing to didjeridoos. She loves to cook supper for friends, is committed to working and living in her neighborhood, volunteering for worthy causes, and using scrap to make art. She considers the volunteers at Scrap true bodhisattvas.

Abby Teel, Workshop and Camp Coordinator, NWSA AmeriCorps Member abby@scrapaction.org
SCRAP Program Focus: in-house workshops, development of summer camp
Abby is from New England (Massachusetts & Vermont). While she is a big fan of puddles (what with the splashing and such) that are a staple of Portland weather, she finds it hard to make “rain-angels”, “rain-men”, “rain-forts” or have a “rain-ball fight” and thus misses the bellybutton-high snow that she enjoyed during the Vermont winters.

She has been involved with other programs like SCRAP in both Burlington, Vermont and New York City, and is very excited and grateful to now be an Americorps/Northwest Service Academy volunteer for such a wonderful organization. She aims to use her knowledge and passion for reused-material art to grow SCRAP’s workshop program and build an art camp for kids due to take place Summer 2008! In her free time, Abby likes to rummage through trash, junk and heaps of stuff…then make stuff with it all.
